A Pro Driver’s Tips

July & August 2004

Racing legend Hurley Haywood, five-time winner at Daytona, gives advice for safer highway driving

Cover the Basics
Check your tires—including the spare—fuel, oil, and all mechanical parts. Keep repair tools on hand. Buckle up.

Look Ahead
I always maintain a 360-degree circle around me to see both long and short range. This allows me to watch out for the worst. If a guy blows a tire in front of you, you have time to think, "How can I avoid hitting him?"

Relax Your Grip
Your hands should stay loosely in the ten and two o'clock positions on the wheel. When you turn, let your hands shuffle back to ten and two o'clock. That way you'll have room to make further steering adjustments.

Concentrate
Don't read maps while driving. Don't make calls. Don't apply makeup. People have horrible habits; that's why they get into trouble. They're not paying attention.
