By William Newcott, May & June 2004

These European river cruise lines offer tours to major World War II sites,
including Normandy, the Rhine, and the Netherlands. All three include most land
tours in the cost of their trips—which run from $1,500 to $6,000, some
including airfare from the U.S.
Avalon Waterways
(877-380-1544)
The new line has just launched two new ships for the U.S. market.
Grand Circle Travel (800-959-0405)
Famous for its uniquely devoted "family" of repeat cruisers, Grand
Circle offers better-than-average meals with wine. In virtually all of its
cabins, twin beds fold down at night. Some cabins have balconies.
Uniworld (800-733-7820)
This line tries hard to simulate an actual cruise ship experience, with onboard
fitness centers, salons, and laundries. Twin beds can be pushed together.
Viking River Cruises
(877-668-4546)
Featuring roomy staterooms with twin beds that can be pushed together, Viking
also seems to get the best docking spaces—a major advantage for short
dashes into town.
D-Day Tour Operators
Battlebus
British-operated minibus tours of Normandy. Approximately $75.
NRTA Explorations and
Collette Vacations (888-260-9365)

up.
