33. Music (playing)

One of life's greatest treasures (not to mention accomplishments) is the ability to play an instrument. It's never too late to learn.

34. Needlework

A friend's grandmother used to crochet delicate lace tablecloths. That friend never did learn the craft, and she still regrets it. For those who master needlework, it's a soothing pasttime that produces beautiful objets d'art.

35. Painting/Drawing

Don't brush off that age-old desire to paint landscapes.

36. Photography

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words, so we'll stop right here.

37. Reading

A good book is your best friend.

  • Get started at BookBrowser, billed as the "guide for avid readers."

38. Sex

If you can't be passionate about sex, then what can you be passionate about?

39. Spirituality

As former New York Mets baseball player Tug McGraw said, "You gotta believe!".

40. Swimming

Whether it's laps in the pool or lazy floats down a sleepy river, the fun is in getting wet.

41. Teaching

We all cherish the memory of that one teacher who inspired us or pushed us or just believed in us. Wouldn't it be nice to be that memory for someone else?

42. Tennis

Get off the 'Net, and work on getting the ball over the net. A leisurely game of tennis hits the sweet spot for many folks.

43. Travel (abroad)

Bon voyage! Spending time in another culture expands the soul.

44. Travel (domestic)

The United States is such a big, beautiful, and diverse country that travelling its many byways can sometimes feel like you're in a foreign country. It takes a lifetime to explore America's vastness, so what are you waiting for?

45. Volunteering

Volunteering doesn't have to be about the people or organization that you're serving. It can be just as enjoyable and fulfilling for you.

46. Walking/Hiking

Why not see the world on foot, one step at a time?

47. Water sports

Sometimes you just need to get beneath the surface of things, like the ocean, for instance.

48. Wine

They say that when you when a open bottle of wine, you uncork the essence of the land and the climate and the people who made it. Drinking it is like sipping from a time capsule.

49. Woodworking

A little humor from the starter site below: "In the beginning, there was nothing. Then God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was still nothing. But you could see it." OK, so we're not sure what the joke has to do with woodworking, but woodworkers obviously have a sense of humor—yet another reason to be passionate about this craft.

50. Writing

"I don't know what I think until I read what I've written." That's the quote that a friend keeps taped to her computer monitor. We couldn't agree more. Write on!

  • Get started at The New York Times' site's collection of Writers on Writing columns. (Don't be discouraged if the site asks you to register in order to access individual articles. Registration is free.)
