Help for Job Seekers
By Karen Reyes, November & December 2004

Rob Roy worked in the aerospace industry for more than 30 years before
deciding to leave. Later, when he chose to go back to work, he found out it
wasn't all that easy. "I wanted to keep on working," says the
Thornton, Colorado, resident. Then he heard about the AARP Foundation Senior
Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), a federally funded work-training
program for low-income workers 55 and older, in a television ad—an ad
that changed his life.
Sandra Wagner, SCSEP project director in the Denver office, interviewed Roy
and placed him at
Home Depot, one of SCSEP's national hiring partners. "Like most
older workers, Rob has a strong work ethic," says Greg McLin, Roy's
direct supervisor. To find out more about SCSEP visit the website or call 888-OUR-AARP
(687-2277).
Another service for older workers is the brand-new AARP Careers website, an employment
information and resource center. Want to find a job? AARP Careers links you to
a network of job banks. Need financial help? Plug into the National Council on Aging BenefitsCheckUp
site and find out what you're eligible to receive. Want to spiff up
your resumé, assess your skills, start a business, or change
occupations? Go to the AARP
Careers website.
