Some folks create lists of many things to experience in life, and they check them off one by one. Other people seek individual passions to which they dedicate the bulk of their free time and energy. No matter how you choose to pursue all that life has to offer, our list below should help you get thinking in the right direction.

1. Acting

There's nothing worse than a 20-something in a white-haired wig.

2. Advocacy

The older we get, the more we realize that, when it comes to things we care about, it pays to get involved.

3. Animals

Research shows that older people are healthier, more active, and less depressed if they have pets.

4. Antiques

One man's trash is another man's treasure.

5. Astronomy

The universe is a big place, and it's expanding even as we speak. If you're really serious about knowing it, you better get started.

6. Bicycling

The best place—and pace—to take in the world may be on a bicycle. Not only is it leisurely enough to really soak up the sights, it's exercise! Now, if only someone would invent a more comfortable seat.

7. Birdwatching

Forget the image of the pith-helmeted nerd. Spying on feathered friends is cool and fun—whether you're at your kitchen window or one of the thousands of birding sites around the world. Grab the binoculars.

8. Boating

Let's see, there are sailboats, powerboats, fishing boats, yachts, dinghies, canoes, kayaks, and more. Which one appeals to you?

9. Cards

Whether you play for money or bragging rights, it's always a good time when friends gather 'round the card table.

10. Cars

You'll probably spend more time restoring and cleaning your car than actually driving it, but that's why it feels so special when you actually get out on the road.

11. Collecting

Okay, I'm coming clean: I collect silver demitasse spoons and plastic snowmen. What's your obsession?

  • Get started at eBay.

12. Computers

There isn't much you can't do while sitting at your computer these days. Send email to friends, shop, research the family tree.

13. Cooking

A dash of art, a dollop of science, a heaping helping of love and generosity—cooking makes everybody feel good.

14. Family

To some, there is no greater satisfaction—and no greater responsibility—than spending time with and taking care of the folks who have been there for you all along.

15. Fine art

Art can sooth or stir the soul. It also ain't bad on the eyes.
