All the Things You Can't Do

By Rayna Goransson (age 9) and her grandmother Gwen Gibson, July 2003

Excerpted from It's Not Easy Being Nine, a collection of illustrated poems

When you're nine and you're finally getting your wings
You find that you still can't do so many things!

You can't take a nap when you're sleepy in school
You can't skinny-dip in your neighbor's new pool

You can't stick your tongue out at things you don't like
You can't be a dare devil riding your bike

You're too old to jump on your grandmother's bed
But too young to go out and earn your own bread

The silliest things can cause all kinds of troubles
Like filling the bathtub with too many bubbles

Or taking your ferret to school on a leash
Or feeding your dog all your broccoli and quiche

I know I'm just going through "that certain stage"
But I'm telling you nine is a very tough age
